Art Colony Members Show & Moose Madness

by Joan on October 18, 2012

A rare sight these days, but Nace Hagemann did it. He had his camera ready when he saw these moose on the Gunflint Trail. It’s a fitting image for Moose Madness Weekend, too.  For more of his photos, see www.nacehagemannphotography.smugmug.com.

This is the weekend to celebrate fall, the harvest and all the creativity during long summer days.

Grand Marais gives a nod to all with the Moose Madness Festival, the Grand Art Colony’s Annual Member Show & Sale and the Family Weekend at North House Folk School. And Betsy Bowen and Laura Erickson will be at Sivertson Gallery for a booksigning of their latest book, and there’s an exhibit of fine furniture and watercolors at the Johnson Heritage Post to see, and this is the final Saturday of the season for the Cook County Farm & Craft Market  … in short, there will be lots to do in Grand Marais this weekend.

Here are the details:

The weekend actually begins on Thursday, Oct. 17, with a variety of courses at North House Folk School. The Family Weekend features more than 12 day and half-day classes through Sunday and there are lots of choices, from felting to breadbaking. Dance caller Terrance Smith will be on campus, and he will teach two workshops: “Simple Tunes for Singing and Dancing,” and “Traditional Music and Dance Family Workshop. He’ll also be the caller for a Community Contra Dance on Saturday night starting at 7 p.m. ($5 a person or $10 family suggested donation.) For more information about the classes and to register, click here.

If you happen to be near a television on Thursday night, check out the fire dancers of the Spin Collective on WDSE’s The Playlist. The show airs at 9 p.m. This is the launch of the fall season for this popular, award-winning program hosted by Karen Sunderman. Here’s a preview of the show.

If you some extra time on Thursday or Friday, check out the exhibit at the Johnson Heritage Post featuring work by fine furniture maker Peter Pestalozzi and watercolorist Ilse Siebenschuh.

The exhibit opened last week and continues through the middle of the month. The Heritage Post is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. To learn more about Pestalozzi, check out a video here.

The Moose Madness Festival begins on Friday with all kinds of moosy things going on all over town. Murray the Moose will be out for photo ops and more, there is a moose poetry contest, moose art at the Info Center, moose stories at the Grand Marais Library. On Saturday, there is a moose scavenger hunt, kite-flying, spinning demonstrations and much more scheduled on Saturday.

To cap off the day, The Pie Place will host the Mocha Moose Cafe and Poetry Salon at 8 p.m. on Saturday night. For a complete schedule of events and participating businesses, click here.

Friday also features the opening of the Grand Marais Art Colony’s Annual Member Show & Sale.

The Art Colony’s Member Show is always a great hit. This photo is of the 2011 exhibit.

“Right Before the Storm,” Lynden Blomberg, 11.

As of this writing, the exhibit hadn’t been installed yet, but from all accounts, there is a great show in the making. Glass, ceramics, encaustic, sumi-e, watercolor, oils, pastels, mono-prints, collage, jewelry, fiber art, metal sculpture and more will be featured. Artists include everyone from youngsters to established professionals.

The Member’s Show opens with a reception at 5 p.m. Friday night. The Art Colony holds its annual meeting at 4 p.m. and members are encouraged to attend. For more information, call 218-387-2737 or visit the Art Colony’s web site here. The exhibit continues through Nov. 21.

Also on Friday night, blues guitarist Gordon Thorne will be on WTIP’s The Roadhouse, which airs from 5-7 p.m. Thorne will play later at the Gunflint Tavern and Max Bichel will join him for a night of music. It starts at 9 p.m.  Roadhouse hosts, Bob Carter and Buck Benson, will also talk to Steve Gilschinski, author of  ”Minnesota Railroads: A Photographic History, 1940-2012.” WTIP is 90.7 on your FM dial. The program can also be streamed here.

On Saturday, the Moose Madness Festival continues as does the North House Family Weekend. The Cook County Farm & Craft Market will celebrate its last market of the 2012 season from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Senior Center Parking lot, too. The market features produce, handcrafted pickles and soaps, the Fika coffee tent and lots of arts and crafts.

Betsy Bowen illustrated Laura Erickson’s latest book, Hawk Ridge.

Also on Saturday, Betsy Bowen and Laura Erickson will be at Sivertson Gallery for a booksigning of their latest book, “Hawk Ridge: Minnesota’s Birds of Prey,” from 1-3 p.m. Bowen crafted the illustrations for the book. Here’s an article about it and her work that ran in MinnPost.com recently.

(Note: It looks like it will another time-traveler Saturday: Contra Dance at North House, Poetry at the Pie Place. What a great choice of fun things to do!)

On Sunday, the Grand Marais Art Colony hosts the “Make-A-Bowl” event to make bowls for the Empty Bowls Fundraiser for the Food Shelf. (The fundraiser is Nov. 8  at the Congregational Church.)  There are only two Make-A-Bowl events left: Sunday at 2 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m. Registration is required to make sure there’s room for everyone.

(Note: Next Saturday, Oct. 27, the public is invited to come to the Art Colony to paint a bowl for Empty Bowls starting at 10 a.m. No registration is required. Call 387-2737 for more information.)
